Softball Extends Win Streak to 12 After Sweep of Lasell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWTON, Mass. The New England College softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Lasell College on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 12-2 and 13-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One New England College 12, Lasell 2
NEC struck in the top of the first inning when Daelyn Ross doubled down the left field line which scored Destiny Helmedach from first base. Izzabella Phelps continued the offense for the Pilgrims when she recorded her first career homerun, driving the ball over the left field fence. Rachel Senechal came to the plate with runners in scoring positions and she put a ball in play that allowed Emily Nelson to score. Chanel Welch capitalized on her opportunity, reaching base on an error which plated another Pilgrim run. Helmedach singled to drive home two more runs before Ross plated Helmedach. By the end of the second inning, the Pilgrims led 7-0. The Lasers strung together as Essie Plouffe doubled home Sarah Kline and Victoria Spellman doubled in Plouffe. That would be the only runs that Lasell could score in the contest. The Pilgrims added four runs in the top of the fourth and another on a Helmedach homerun in the fifth. NEC plated 12 runs on 14 hits in the game one victory.

Taylor Barbour struck out nine batters in five innings of work. She will improve to 9-2 on the season after allowing five hits and two runs, both earned.

Game Two New England College 13, Lasell 2
Lasell plated the first runs of game two on a Kelsey Scannevin single which scored Kline but an error allowed a second run to score. Jasmin Alvarado tripled with the bases loaded to give the Pilgrims a 3-2 lead which would turn into a 4-2 lead when Alvarado scored on wild pitch. Another triple in the inning, this one by Helmedach extended the lead. Yesenia Dominguez and Taylor Dill both drove in runs in the bottom of the third to cap off the seven run inning. Alvarado, Helmedach, and Dominguez all drive in runs in the fourth inning which gave the Pilgrims a 10-2 by the end of the inning. Alvarado drove in her fifth run of the game on an RBI groundout before Senechal drove a two-run single up the middle. The Pilgrims scored 13 runs on 15 hits in game two.

Emily Farone improved to 4-1 on the season after she threw five innings, striking out one batter and giving up two runs, one earned.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-This was the fifth and sixth meetings between the Pilgrims and Lasers. The Pilgrims lead the series 4-2.
-The Pilgrims are winners of 12 consecutive.
-Alvarado set a new career-high for RBI with five. She now leads the team in RBI with 20 on the season.
