STANDISH, Maine – The New England College softball team battled back from an early deficit but ultimately fell just short against Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Play-In round at the Richard W. Bailey Field in Standish, Maine.
THE BASICS
Score: #5N NEC 3, #4N SJC 4
Records: Pilgrims 14-23 | Monks 17-22
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monks struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning and added another run in the fourth on an RBI double from senior catcher Abby Carpenter (Bath, Maine).
- Now trailing 2-0, the 'Grims were poised to rally in the fifth; sophomore infielder Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) reached on an error and then advanced to second on a single by senior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.). After a sacrifice bunt successfully moved both runners, Garcia would come in to score on an RBI single from junior infielder Julia Maker (Warwick, R.I.). The next batter, junior infielder Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) would single home Olson to knot the game up at 2-2. Later that same inning, sophomore infielder Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) came through with a single of her own to plate Maker and give the 'Grims the 3-2 lead.
- In the bottom of the fifth, SJC would take advantage of a Pilgrim's fielding error to lead off the half-inning, using a walk and a sacrifice bunt to advance the lead runner to third, before then scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game back up at three a-piece.
- With one out in the top of the sixth, the 'Grims loaded the bases with three consecutive singles from Garcia, Olson, and junior infielder Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.). But Saint Joseph's starting pitcher Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) was able to force a groundball, and the Monks defense got out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.
- After the first two batters got on for the hosts in the bottom of the sixth, and were moved over on a sacrifice bunt, the Monks would seize the lead on an RBI single by Anna Gilbert (Gray, Maine), however the 'Grims were able to limit the damage as right fielder sophomore outfielder Arianna Bayze (Temecula, Calif.) threw out the second Monk at the plate. Olson then struck out Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) to end the inning.
- In the seventh, sophomore utility Kate Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) worked a one-out walk and later junior catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) reached on an error with two outs to extend the game. With the tying run at second, the Monks forced a grounder to the second baseman to end the game.
