New England College

Hall of Fame

NOW ACCEPTIONG NOMINATIONS: Click here for the NEC Hall of Fame Nomination Form

Established in 1992, the New England College Athletics Hall of Fame recognizes the achievements of those student-athletes, coaches, administrators, teams, and friends of the athletics program who have brought distinction to themselves and the College through their achievement, commitment, sportsmanship, and leadership in athletics. Starting in 2019, individuals are inducted bi-annually and are recognized at a ceremony held during Fall Festival weekend.

The Hall of Fame was the brainchild of George R. Hamilton, who joined NEC’s faculty in 1964 and created the physical education curriculum. In the years that followed, Hamilton became a professor of physical education, served 21 years as director of physical education, served 12 years as athletic director, and coached, at various times, basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis.

Nominations may be made by anyone connected with NEC. Please submit names and rationale for nomination to the Hall of Fame Committee Chair.

Hall of Fame Categories
  1. ATHLETE.  Outstanding performance during the undergraduate or post-graduate years; All-American status and performance at the regional and national levels and recognition by regional and national associations are important criteria.
  2. COACH.  Outstanding record and/or accomplishment as a New England College coach. Contributions to coaching organizations will also be considered. Recognition by other organizations (Coach of the Year) and Hall of Fames will be important credentials for consideration.
  3. CONTRIBUTOR.  A major contributor to New England College athletics.  Criteria for consideration will include contributions to professional organizations, international sports associations, and grass-root sports movements.
  4. TEAM. Outstanding record or accomplishments such as an NCAA Championship or finalist, conference championship, or an undefeated season.

Note:  In the selection process, it will be important to recognize that intercollegiate athletics and sport, in general, have changed significantly over time, and performance in different decades should not be compared.

Criteria For Selection:
  • Athletes, coaches, and other individuals who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the New England College Athletics Program may be considered.
  • A candidate must have participated in intercollegiate athletics at New England College, while also earned a four-year degree from NEC, or have been a contributing member of the NEC community.
  • Athletes will become eligible for consideration five years from the end of the academic year in which they completed their athletic participation at NEC.
  • No such extra wait period consideration shall be necessary for coaches and other contributors.
  • Athletes shall be based primarily upon the demonstrated performance in a varsity sport for the overall period and not a single performance.
  • Nominated candidates will remain on the Hall of Fame ballot for a period of ten (10) years.  After the 10-year period has elapsed, the candidate will be removed from the ballot if he or she has not been elected.  The candidate may be nominated again after the 10-year period.
 Selection Process

Any member of the New England College community is invited to nominate a candidate using the online nomination form, linked here.  Only complete nominations and statistical data verified by the NEC Athletics Communications staff will be considered. The deadline for nominations is January 31st of the year in which the next Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held. The selection and announcement of the new class shall be completed no later than the end of April in each election cycle.  Beginning in 2019, the induction of new Hall of Fame members will occur bi-annually in September or October during Fall Festival Weekend.

Each class will consist of four to eight inductees:

  • Student-Athletes: Minimum of 2, maximum of 6 per class
  • Team: Not more than one team per class
  • Coach: Not more than one coach per class
  • Special Recognition: Not more than one per class

Nominees must receive 66.66% of the votes from the selection committee to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  In the event of a tie in a particular category, the selection committee will re-vote on the candidates with the least votes only if the category has reached its maximum capacity.
