Softball Slugs Their Way to a Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FL. The New England College softball team picked up a sweep of their doubleheader against Rosemont and Monmouth College at Hancock Recreational Complex at the PFX Experience.

How it Happened
Game One New England College 9, Rosemont 1
The Pilgrims flexed their muscle in game one, as they launched three long balls. Daelyn Ross got the game started with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, to left center field. The Ravens responded with a home run of their own, as Kaileigh Whalen hit a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning. Taylor Barbour hit a solo home run of her own in the bottom half of the inning.

In Barbour's next plate appearance, she hit a grand slam down the left field line. New England College would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rachel Senechal singled home Alexa Scribner and, then scored on a Jasmin Alvarado base hit to center field.

In the circle, Barbour struck out 10 over six innings, while allowing just one earned run on four hits.

Game Two New England College 7, Monmouth College 6
Alvarado carried her momentum into the second game, as the freshman started the scoring in the top of the second with a bases-clearing double to right center field. The Fighting Scots got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Alexis Opel drove in Cassidy Abbott with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Monmouth would tie the game in the home half of the sixth, as Opel singled to left center field, scoring two runs.

The Pilgrims regained the lead in the top of the seventh, as Destiny Helmedach dropped in a base hit to left center field, plating Alvarado. Taylor Dill kept the scoring going with an RBI single of her own, prior to Shawnie Clark picking up a painful RBI after being hit by a pitch. Gabriella Marcheschi scored the fourth run of the inning on an error.

The Fighting Scots rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as they had three runners crossed home plate before Barbour got a Monmouth batter to pop out to shortstop.


Inside the Numbers
  • This was the first two meetings between the two schools, the Pilgrims now lead the all-time series against both schools 1-0.
  • Three home runs against Rosemont is the most that the Pilgrims hit since they slugged three against Maine Maritime on March 31, 2012.
