HOW IT HAPPENEDThe first period saw several power-play opportunities early on but neither team was able to capitalize. Just over halfway through the period, the Pilgrims were able to break the scoring drought and take a 1-0 lead.
Madison Nipper was able to take a shot that chipped in past the goalie.
Kaylee Cross and
Mikayla Vincent both picked up assists on the goal. Following the goal, neither team was able to score again for the majority of the period. However, with just over one second remaining in the first the Wildcats fired a shot from just outside the blue line that managed to find its way to the back of the net. With that goal, things were tied up at 1-1 heading into the second period.
Despite the late goal JWU was unable to carry that momentum into the second period as they were unable to get much going despite many opportunities. The Wildcats had 12 shots on goal to New England College's six but had nothing to show for it. NEC was able to turn away each opportunity as they saved all 12 shots on goal. The Pilgrims had some opportunities as well but were also unable to score as the second period closed with the score still at 1-1.
New England College came out hot in the third period as they scored just 19 seconds in for a 2-1 lead.
Kaylee Cross received the puck form
Cassandra Kelly and fired it towards the net from deep as the puck went bar-down for the goal. Just over five minutes later JWU was able to score again and tie things up at 2-2. With just under five minutes to play
Madison Nipper reclaimed the lead at 3-2. The Pilgrims had a breakaway off a turnover and Nipper took a wrister that beat the goalie to the top left corner. With just about one minute remaining the Wildcats had a power-play and pulled their goalie giving them a six on four advantage. With the advantage, they were able to score and tie things up at 3-3 to send the game to overtime. Neither team was able to score in overtime as the game finished in a 3-3 tie.
