HENNIKER, N.H. - A pair of goals by senior Isabella Marzano (Warwick, R.I.) helps lift the 'Grims to a non-conference win against Framingham State on Tuesday evening.
The matchup opened with a scoreless first period; NEC controlled much of the play early. The Pilgrims held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goals and a 20-10 edge in total shots attempts, while also winning 12 of 17 faceoffs.
The Pilgrims carried their momentum into the second period, but it was not until just about halfway through the period where the Rams of Framingham scored first. The team didn't let the goal get in their way with three different 'Grims attacking the net until freshman Keira Gallacher (Okotoks, Alta.) broke through with help from senior Kate Devlin (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) This was Gallacher first career goal, to tie the game. Sophomore Jamie Blondin (Oakville, Ont.) was able to get in on action on a powerplay goal with an assist from Gallacher with about 40 seconds left in the period. Going into the second intermission, the 'Grims led 2-1.
NEC was able to blow open the game just a little over halfway through the period where Devlin found the net for the first time this season and an assist from Gilchrist. With the score 3-1, the 'Grims did not give up on offense with winning three straight faceoffs. Which led to Marzano scoring her third goal of the season. Then just two minutes later she scored again this time with an assist from junior Samantha Babbitt (Weathersfield, Vt.) and junior Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.). This rounded out the game for NEC with a final score of 5-1. Sophomore goalie Anna McGinty (Duxbury, Mass.) earned the win with 33 saves.
The team is back in action next weekend on February 20th against UMASS-Boston at 4:00 PM in Lee Clement.
