Football Downs Norwich in Pre-Varsity Play

Dontrell White
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The New England College football team won 41-7 in pre-varsity action at Norwich University on Sunday at Sabine Field in Northfield, Vermont.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Less than one minute into the game, the 'Grims made their first big play on the Cadets' opening drive, as NEC freshman linebacker Jayman Jones (Manchester, N.H.) intercepted a pass on third down to give the ball to the visitors. Just a few plays later, NEC freshman quarterback Jackson Lombardo (Medford, Mass.) connected with sophomore quarterback Icean Taylor (Manchester, N.H.) in the endzone for the first score of the game.
  • With 11:45 left in the first quarter, NEC freshman defensive lineman Erik Menger (Stratham, N.H.) made another explosive play, picking off a screen pass and taking it to the house for a pick-six as the Pilgrims went up 14-0.
  • With just over six minutes left in the first quarter, and Norwich going for it on fourth down, NEC freshman linebacker Scheider Fortin (Worcester, Mass.) sacked the quarterback to force the turnover on downs. With the ball back in their possession, the Pilgrims turned to NEC freshman running back Dontrell White (Weare, N.H.) who raced into the endzone to give the 'Grims a 21-0 lead.
  • Later in the half, NEC freshman defensive back Tanner Ayotte (Swanzey, N.H.) came up with a fumble recovery for another Pilgrim possession, this one coming to an end when freshman kicker Jackson Kirsch (Chester, N.H.) split the uprights for a field goal, giving NEC a 24-0 lead.
  • NEC would strike again late with 1:03 left in the first as Lombardo made a short pass out to the left side of the field as the quarterback was able to find sophomore running back Aidan McDonald (Salem, N.H.), for a 35-yard touchdown reception to conclude the first half of action with NEC leading 31-0 going into halftime.
  • On the first drive of the second half, White sprinted for a 60-yard rush to set up another touchdown run for himself. Combined with another Kirsch field goal later in the quarter, that would be all the offense the 'Grims would need.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Sunday, September 29th when they travel to the Bridgton Academy for a 1:00 p.m. game.
