BIDDEFORD, Maine - The New England College football team saw their inaugural season come to a close on Saturday, dropping their season finale at the University of New England at Blue Storm Stadium in Biddeford, Maine, winning the inaugural Battle of Route 202.
In the first quarter, the Nor'Easters totaled 110 rushing yards and added two rushing touchdowns to take an early 14-0 lead. That advantage would grow to 35-0 by halftime as UNE continued to find success on the ground while also adding two scores through the air.
The University of New England scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and added a 23-yard field goal in the early goings of the fourth quarter.
With 5:17 left in the game, the Pilgrims put together a 13-play, 58-yard drive culminating in a 32-yard field goal by freshman Vanilson Andrade (New Bedford, Mass.). Junior Aidan McDonald (Salem, N.H.) had a 12-yard rush on the drive while sophomore Conrado Lago (Methuen, Mass.) snagged two seven-yard grabs leading to the field goal.
McDonald totaled 63 yards on 20 rushes as he handled the ball on just about half of the Pilgrims' offensive plays. Lago had five catches on the day for a team-high 33 receiving yards.
The home team scored once more with just 26 seconds left in the game to secure the win by a final score of 59-3. The Nor'Easters eclipsed 700 yards of total offense in the win. UNE also committed 16 penalties worth 180 yards.
The Pilgrims officially finish their first season back on the gridiron with a 1-9 (1-6 CNE) record. They earned their first win since 1950 earlier in the season and will look to build upon this foundation as they enter year two.
