Baseball's Historic Season Ends in NCAA Division III Baseball Super Regional

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. The historic New England College baseball season came to a close on Saturday afternoon. After winning game two of the best of three series 6-4, the Pilgrims fell in a winner-take-all game three against No. 23 the University of Massachusetts Boston in the Division III Super Regional at Monan Park on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE New England College 6, UMass Boston 4
The Beacons threatened in the top of the second, as they had a runner on third with just one out in the frame, Joe Maestu picked off a runner off third, before Stanley Vargas struck out Nico Kydes looking to end the inning. New England College had their first two runners reach base, but they could not get either across, as the two teams would head to the top of the third tied at 0-0.

The Pilgrims struck first in the bottom of the third, as Evan Delaney launched a grand slam over the monster at Monan Park, giving NEC 4-0 innings. UMass Boston got on the board in the top of the fourth, as Eddie Riley led off the inning with a triple to dead center field, before scoring on a wild pitch, making it 4-1 NEC.

In the top of the fifth, Kydes crossed the plate on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a single to right center field. That was the only run that was scored in the fifth, as the Pilgrims stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame.

In the sixth inning, the Beacons tied the game in the top half on the inning. With the bases-loaded double to left field off the bat of Charlie Huegi evened the game up at 4-4.

The Pilgrims took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, Maestu crossed home plate on a wild pitch, making it 5-4 New England College. Anderson Jimenez made it 6-4 NEC with single to left field, chasing Joey Rogers from the game.

Vargas got the start for the Pilgrims going 5.0 innings allowing just one earned run while striking out four batters. Manuel Alejandro pitched 3.1 innings in relief for NEC, as the senior allowed just one hit in his time on the mound.

GAME TWO UMass Boston 6, New England College 2
Eddie Riley would start off the bottom of the second with a double as he would score in two batters later, as Ryan McCormick's single that snuck under Anderson Jimenez' glove at second. The Beacons would make it 2-0, as a line drive off the glove of Dylan Champagne, where Huegi beat out the infield single. UMass Boston would add another run with a single off the bat of Nick Herzog.

The Pilgrims would get on the board in the top of the fourth, as Delaney would launch his second home run of the day with a monster homer over the left field fence. In the bottom half of the inning, the Beacons added two runs making it 5-1 UMB.

UMass Boston added an insurance run in the bottom half of the seventh, as Huegi reached on a bunt single, but advanced to second on a throwing error. After a ground out to first, advancing the runner to third, the Beacons scored a sixth run of the game with a Josh Lopez double down the right-field line.

In the ninth, Powers lead off the inning with a double to left center, before moving to third on a single from Jameson Carey. Powers would cross the plate on a Christian Aybar sacrifice fly to center field, making it 6-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-This was the sixth and seventh meeting between the two teams, UMass Boston leads the all-time series 6-1
- The win in game two of the series snaps an eight-game winning streak for the Beacons.
-New England College is now 7-2 on the year when Delaney hits a home run.
