Pilgrims Fall to No. 23 Beacons in the NCAA Division III Super Regional Opener

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. A two-run RBI single in the bottom of the eighth from Ryan McCormick leads No. 23 the University of Massachusetts Boston over New England College 5-4, in game one of Division III Baseball Super Regional at Monan Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New England College were able to strike first, as Christian Aybar led off the game with a single to left center field. After back-to-back wild pitches from Fernando Burgos, Anderson Jimenez lifted a fly ball to right field, deep enough for Aybar to score from third. Connor Morin scored as Luis Atiles beat out an infield single to make it 2-0 after the top of the first.

The Beacons got on the board in the bottom of the second, as Eddy Riley led off the game with a triple to deep center field and would score on a wild pitch. Two more runs would score as Charlie Huegi doubled down the left field line, making it 3-2 UMass Boston.

Both pitchers settled down in the middle innings before the Pilgrims regained the lead in the top of the fifth. After back-to-back singles from Jimenez and Morin, Jimenez advanced to third on a fly out to right field but scored on a throwing error. Morin came around to score when Nick Powers ripped a bases-loaded single through the right side of the infield.

The Beacons regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth, as after the first two runners reached, a Ryan McCormick flared a single to left field scoring a pair.

Starting pitcher Nick Powers settled down after allowing three runs in the bottom of the second, as he retired 16 of the last 21 batters he faced, heading into the bottom of the eighth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-This was the fifth meeting between the two teams, UMass Boston leads the all-time series 5-0
-The Pilgrims are now 2-2 against nationally ranked teams.
-NEC is now 4-7 in one-run games and 3-5 against Little East Conference opponents.
