HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seahawks jumped on the board early with a sacrifice fly by Zack Smith in the bottom of the first inning. Michael DeFusco doubled to left center field, which drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the Seahawk lead to 3-0. Another Smith sacrifice fly and a Jack Betts single gave Salve Regina a 5-0 lead through five innings.
The Pilgrims rallied with a four-run seventh inning.
Anderson Jimenez led off the inning with a single. After a fly out,
Joe Maestu homered to left field. The two-run homerun is the first of the season and the first of his collegiate career.
Christian Aybar kept the bats rolling with a double and Luis Atiles singled. With two outs, Evan Delaney singled to score Aybar and Xavier Nunez singled through the right side to score Atiles. However, the Pilgrims could not keep the inning going and stranded two runners on base. The score was now 5-4, in favor of the Seahawks.
Salve Regina would tack on five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning open up a six run lead, headed to the final frame. The Pilgrims recorded base runners but could not bring them around in the ninth inning.
Dylan Champagne made his first start of his collegiate career. He threw 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out one.
Bobby Fulkerson and
Selah Dalomba came on in relief of the freshman pitcher.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-This was the 39
th meeting all-time between the two schools. The Seahawks are now 35-4 against the Pilgrims.
-The last time the two schools met was in 2011 when the Pilgrims were still members of The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The matchups in 2011 were conference games.
-Champagne made his first career collegiate start on the mound for the Pilgrims.
-Maestu hit his first career collegiate homerun.
