HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team lost 5-4 in overtime against visiting Salve Regina University on Saturday at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

THE BASICS
Score:                  Salve Regina University 5, New England College 4 OT
Records:              Seahawks 13-8-0, 8-7-0 NEHC | Pilgrims 2-17-0, 1-12-0 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Seahawks got on the board first just 7:38 into the game when SRU sophomore forward Emily Wroblewski (Lake Linden, Mich.) scored her team-leading tenth goal of the season with an assist to sophomore forward Ashtyn Bringardner (Raynham, Mass.).
  • With just 1:51 left in the first period, NEC freshman forward Angelina De Divitiis (St. Catherines, Ontario) tied the game at 1-1, assisted by junior forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.).
  • The second period saw a plethora of back-and-forth scoring as SRU junior forward Samantha McKenzie (East Falmouth, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal to give the lead back to the Seahawks at 6:29 into the bracket, only to be answered with 8:26 remaining in the period when Gilchrist knotted it up for NEC, assisted by Lindberg and sophomore defender Mae Lafferty (South Boston, Mass.). Just one minute later, it would again be McKenzie for the Seahawks as she scored her ninth goal of the season, assisted by junior forward Riley Esposito (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore forward Gina Richard (Northborough, Mass.) as the visitors went up 3-2. Finally, with 1:17 left in the second, NEC junior defender Jordan Pond (Gardner, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season to tie it up at 3-3, with assists to Lindberg and Lafferty. The game headed into the final period tied up once again.
  • Just 3:29 into the third period, the 'Grims would take their first lead of the game as Lindberg scored her sixth goal of the season, assisted by sophomore forward Samantha Babbitt (Weathersfield, Vt.). But 22 seconds later, NEC was hit with a costly interference infraction, setting up a penalty shot attempt for Wroblewski. The sophomore converted, tying the game at 4-4. A scramble in the closing moments of regulation was not enough to determine a winner, and the game headed into overtime.
  • Just nine seconds into the extra period, Esposito scored the game-winner for the Seahawks, with an assist to Richard. NEC falls to 1-4 in overtime contests.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC sophomore goaltender Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.) tallied 51 saves on the night for the Pilgrims.
  • SRU junior goaltender Livia Krzywulak (Felton, Penn.) posted ten stops for the Seahawks.
  • Shots on goal were 55-14 in favor of the Seahawks.
MOORE-CAPOLINO MEMORIAL GAME
  • Prior to the game, the New England College women's hockey program held a brief ceremony in remembrance of former Pilgrims Meghan Moore and Sidney Capolino, who were tragically killed less than a year ago. Joined by the families of these two beloved student-athletes, Moore and Capolino were remembered by the entire NEC community, as their family members performed a ceremonial puck drop. Both women continue to influence the team and the rest of the New England College community every day.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the ice on Friday when they host Vermont State University Castleton in a 4:00 p.m. game.
