HOW IT HAPPENED
In the early portion of the first period, neither side was able to establish any momentum on offense. It wasn't until just under five minutes remaining in the period when Salem State was able to get on the board. Isabella Perrotti's shot from the point got tipped in the slot by Alexis Thomas. Thomas' redirection just beat Hannah Podvey to the far post.
The Vikings doubled their lead in the early minutes of the third period, as Carolyn Mahoney beat the Pilgrims' defense and scored. Salem State would push their lead to 3-0 after Alexis Thomas scored her second of the game. New England College would respond 30 seconds later, at 12:38, as Cassie Kelly got NEC on the board. On a 5-on-3 advantage, Kelly was able to lift the puck over the sprawled-out SSU netminder. Salem State would add one more score before the end of the second period to go up 4-1. The Vikings would add one more to push their lead to 5-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Hannah Podvey picked up 19 saves for the Pilgrims
- Salem State had a slight advantage in the shot department, as they outshot NEC 24-23.
