Pilgrims Fall on the Road to Beacons

BOSTON, MASS. - The New England College women's ice hockey team fell on the road Friday night, dropping a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup to UMass Boston 1-0.

The Pilgrims tested the Beacons' defense early in the period with a series of shots all of which were blocked. UMass Boston answered with chances of their own, but sophomore goaltender Anna McGinty (Duxbury, Mass.) made the saves. The teams continued to trade shots late in the frame, but the period ended locked at 0-0.

The Beacons kept the pressure on McGinty, firing several shots on goal that were turned away. UMass Boston continued to control the pace, generating chances that were blocked by junior Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.) and freshman Molly Jones (Golden, Colo.). In the 11th minute, Maggie Lynch broke the deadlock to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead. UMass Boston outshot NEC 41-5 in the second period and carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

UMass Boston continued to fire shots that were saved by McGinty in the final period of action. The Pilgrims responded with shots from sophomore Angelina De Divitiis (St. Catherines, Ont.) and senior Kate Devlin (Walpole, Mass.) that were saved by Beacons goaltender Leah Bosch. NEC continued to test the Beacons defense with shots from sophomore Cordelia Hauck (Hugo, Minn.), junior Mae Lafferty (South Boston, Mass.), and freshman Pnina Basov (Ma'alot, Israel), but UMass Boston held tough and denied the shots. The teams continued to trade shots late in the period, but the Beacons secured the 1-0 victory.

McGinty recorded 51 saves in net for the Pilgrims while Jones and Hornsby recorded three blocks each.

The Pilgrims return to action on Saturday for Hockey Fights Cancer Night, hosting Anna Maria College in a non-conference matchup with a 3:00 PM start.
