Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. The New England College men's basketball team extended their winning streak to six games with an 80-67 win over Becker College in New England Collegiate Conference play, Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Pilgrims move to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while the Hawks fall to 10-13 and 3-7 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENEDThe Pilgrims and the Hawks had a slow start to the game as the first points did not come until almost a minute into the game. The Pilgrims started the scoring, but Becker College was able to quickly respond and keep the game close. The first half took more of a defensive turn as neither team was able to pull themselves away from one another, only getting as far as a two-point game difference. The first break seemed to happen 19:00 minutes into the game when the Pilgrims took the lead 38-34. Kareem Octavian was able to further the lead for the Pilgrims by receiving a pass from
Larry McKinney, with five seconds on the clock, hitting a three. The first half score was 41-36.
In the second half, the two teams jockeyed for control of the game, as both sides traded baskets. It wasn't until the 12-minute mark that the Pilgrims took a double-digit lead (58-46), following a McKinney drained a three.
Izaiah Winston-Brooks scored six-consecutive points, pushing the NEC lead to 15 (64-49), with 7:13 showing on the clock. New England College's lead would balloon to 18 points (73-55) following a McKinney layup. Despite a late push by the Hawks, the Pilgrims hit four-of-four free throws down the stretched.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS-
Calvin Cheek filled the stat sheet as he scored nine points, nine steals, seven assists, six rebounds, and one block.
-Becker controlled the glass, as they outrebounded the Pilgrims 39-25.
-The Pilgrims are now 4-0 all-time against the Hawks.
