Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. After being down 15 with 12:09 left in regulation, the New England College men's basketball team battled back to defeated Colby-Sawyer College 95-90 in non-conference action, Monday evening in Bridges Gym.
With the win, the Pilgrims move to 9-5, while the Chargers fall to 6-6.
HOW IT HAPPENEDBoth teams traded baskets to start the game as the score was pushed to 10-10 just over two minutes in. Five minutes in the Pilgrims were able to take a six-point lead at 20-14. The lead wouldn't last long though as the Chargers scored six straight to tie things up at 20-20 just a couple minutes later. Colby-Sawyer kept pushing and claimed a 26-22 lead nine minutes in as New England College called a timeout to regroup. Despite the Pilgrim's best efforts, the Chargers kept rolling as they held a 41-31 lead with just under five minutes to play. New England College had back-to-back baskets to end the half but was still behind as Colby-Sawyer led 49-42 after the first 20 minutes of play. The Chargers shot 68.8% from the field in the first half while the Pilgrims shot 44.4%.
New England College struck first in the second half and slowly chipped away as they cut the lead to 56-52 five minutes in. Colby-Sawyer quickly regained control as they held a 10 point lead just a minute later. From there each team had small runs but the Chargers were still in control by a score of 73-62 with 10 minutes to play. Colby-Sawyer continued to lead but the Pilgrims would not go away as they were behind 84-76 with five minutes to play. New England College gained some momentum late as they took a 14-0 run over four minutes to claim the lead at 88-84 with just over two minutes to play. The Chargers ended their scoring drought but the Pilgrims did not slow down as they were up 91-86 with 1:29 to play. Colby-Sawer hit a three on the ensuing possession to cut the lead to two and New England College failed to score as the Chargers got the ball with just under a minute to play. Errol Crawford. NEC was then sent to the free-throw line but missed as Colby-Sawyer went down and made it to the free-throw line themselves as thy went one for two for a score of 91-90. New England College was then quickly sent to the charity stripe with 14.5 seconds left as they hit both to go up 93-90. The Chargers threw up a desperation three as the Pilgrims earned a 95-90 victory with two late free-throws.
