Women's Ice Hockey Charges Past Salem State, 4-2

SALEM, MASS. Brittany Tierney (Ottawa, Ontario) scored two goals and Meghan Moore (Centerville, Mass.) had a goal and two assists as New England College defeated Salem State 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena.

The Pilgrims snap a nine-game slide and improve to 2-11-1 while the Vikings slide to 1-10-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Moore put New England College up 1-0 at 12:24 of the first when she beat goalie Sarah Plourde (Hooksett, N.H.) to a loose puck in the crease. Tierney extended the lead to 2-0 when she punched in her own rebound with less than two minutes remaining in the first.

Tierney made the score 3-0 midway through the second period when she rifled in a slap shot into the top right corner for the only goal of the second.

Vicki Shaw (Dracut, Mass.) added the fourth Pilgrims' goal at 2:37 of the third when her shot found the back of net. Salem State fought back, adding a goal on the power play as Kerryann Goode (Millis, Mass.) broke the shutout with her second tally of the season. Casie Curtin (Wrentham, Mass.) and Kylie Currier (Middleton, Mass.) were credited with the assists. The trio teamed up again for Salem State's second score at 9:17 of the third.

However, the Vikings could not continue the rally, as goalie Ashley Castriotta (Framingham, Mass.) kept Salem State off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period, making the final 4-2.

GOALTENDERS
Castriotta made 27 saves in the win while Plourde stopped 16 in the loss. The Vikings outshot the Pilgrims 29-20 for the game.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Pilgrims wrap up their five-game road streak with a 4:00 p.m. New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game at No. 2 Norwich on Monday. NEC will host Plymouth State on Saturday, January 20th at 3:00 p.m.
