Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season

HENNIKER, N.H.- Amherst College junior Christopher Martin scored three goals and assisted the other score as the Lord Jeffs topped the New England College Pilgrims 4-0 in men's soccer action Tuesday night.

With the win Amherst improves to 1-0-0 on the season, while the loss is the first of the season for NEC who falls to 3-1-0 overall.

Amherst would strike in the 4th minute of play as Nico Pascual-Leone would play a ball from midfield finding the foot of Christopher Martin who would find the top of the net putting the Lord Jeffs up 1-0.

Neither team would muster a score the rest of the opening period as Amherst would have several opportunities early outshooting NEC 10-8. The Pilgrims' best scoring chance would come late in the half as NEC would have two free kicks but were unable to convert.

The Lord Jeffs would come out of halftime with energy scoring three goals over the first 10 minutes of play. Andrew Orozco would pick up the first score of the second half as he would put in a feed from the wing off the foot of Martin in the 49th minute. Martin and Bryce Ciambella would then hook up for a pair of goals as Martin would put in a pass from the end line from Ciambella in the 51st minute. Just four minutes later the pair would connect again as Ciambella would sneak through a pass that Martin would on-touch in.

The two teams would close out the remaining 35 minutes scoreless as Amherst would finish the day with 19-10 advantage in shots, while NEC held the 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Picking up the win in goal for Amherst was Thomas Bull who finished the game with three saves. Seeing the bulk of the time in net for NEC was Tenzin Khenrab who notched six saves.

NEC returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they hit the road to take on non-conference opponent Regis College. Amherst will take the field again Saturday, Sept. 12 when they open conference play against Bowdoin College.
