Henniker, N.H.— Three different Lyons would net goals lifting the Wheaton College men's soccer team past the New England College Pilgrims 3-1 Tuesday afternoon.
With the win the Lyons improve to 6-6-2 overall, while the loss drops the Pilgrims to 5-8-1 on the season.
The Pilgrims would start the scoring early as
Zak Harris (Bennington, Vt.) would put in a corner off the foot of
Aaron Kolb (New Durham, N.H.) just 2:05 into the opening half.
The Lyons would get the equalizer in the 15th minute as Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y.) would grab a deflection off the Pilgrim keeper and score the empty-netter. Wheaton would take the 2-0 lead just over a minute later as Max Swanson (Lexington, Mass.) would put in a cross from Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass.) recording his team-high eighth goal of the season.
Wheaton would tack on one more goal in the first half of play as Fedrico Kelly (Hingham, Mass.) would score assisted by Rory McGonigle (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the 33rd minute.
The two defenses would settle down in second half as neither team would be able to muster a goal. The Lyons finished the game out shooting the Pilgrims 23-8.
Picking up the win in goal for Wheaton College was Jeff Paer (Fair Lawn, N.J.) who finished the game with four saves. Splitting time in goal for NEC was
Robert Millard (Barrington, R.I.) who had nine saves and
Robbie Fuller (Lyndeborough, N.H.) who recorded three saves.
New England College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they travel to take on NAC opponent Maine Maritime Academy. Wheaton College will battle NEWMAC foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Worcester.
