CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - Freshman Tommaso Sala (Villanova D'Albenla, Italy) raced as an individual this weekend, representing the NEC alpine ski team at the USCSA Eastern Regionals held at Sugarloaf Mountain. At just 17 years old, Sala placed inside the top 30 in both the giant slalom and slalom races.
Sala impressed in Saturday's giant slalom race, finishing 29th of 79 skiers from around the region with a two-run total time of 1:50.04 - his fastest GS time of the season. He posted a 54.55 on his first run, followed by a 55.49 on run two. He had the 25th fastest time on his second run down the mountain to move up to 29th in the giant slalom at the conclusion of day one.
In the slalom on Sunday, the freshman turned in a 48.88 on his first run, good for 32nd of the 79 participants. He shaved off more than four seconds on his second run, crossing the line in 44.43. The 27th fastest run, Sala moved up four spots to 28th overall with his total time of 1:33.31.
Sala wraps up the Pilgrims first season back in the MacConnell Division with a strong individual showing and a pair of top 30 finishes, a mark that both he and the entire team will look to build upon in year two back in the MacConnell Division.
