Box Score NORTHFIELD, V.T. – The New England College women's soccer team traveled to Norwich University on Wednesday night for a midweek Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup.
The Cadets struck early, finding the back of the net in the second minute of play to take a 1–0 lead. NEC responded with pressure, searching for the equalizer. Senior Mia Loewenberg (Milford, Conn.) recorded the first shot for the Pilgrims but couldn't convert.
Shortly after, senior goalkeeper Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) made a key save and quickly pushed the ball upfield. Loewenberg chested it down to sophomore Michelina Follis (Saugus, Mass.), who connected with graduate Shelby McBain (Indianhead, Md.). From 35 yards out, McBain fired a long-range shot into the top right corner to tie the match at 1–1.
The remainder of the first half saw back-and-forth action, with NEC tallying five shots—two on goal—by the break.
Norwich opened the second half with possession, but the Pilgrims quickly countered, earning a free kick they were unable to capitalize on. The Cadets then reclaimed the lead after a deflected shot off the post found Kat Probst, who made it 2–1. Moments later, Follis fired a shot on target, but Norwich goalkeeper Abby Kirrane made the save.
Both teams traded opportunities until the 66th minute, when Norwich extended its advantage to 3–1.
The Pilgrims continued to battle, earning a free kick deep in the attacking zone. Follis was fouled inside the box, setting up a penalty kick for Loewenberg, who buried it in the top left corner to close the gap to 3–2.
Norwich responded just minutes later with another goal in the 75th minute to seal the 4–2 victory.
Loewenberg and McBain led NEC with three shots apiece, while Loewenberg placed two on goal.
The Pilgrims return home Friday to face Albertus Magnus College at 3:00 p.m.
