Five Pilgrims Score 10+ Points in Conference Loss to Monks

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's basketball team took a close loss against visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday at the Bridges Gymnasium in Henniker, New Hampshire in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

THE BASICS
Score: Saint Joseph's College: 77, New England College: 70
Records: Monks: 14-4, 6-1 GNAC| Pilgrims: 3-15, 1-6 GNAC

TURNING POINTS

  • The Pilgrims got five quick points off a layup from sophomore center Aiden MacLeod (Wilmington, Mass.) and a three-pointer from graduate guard Nick Gomeau (Enfield, Conn.). The teams traded baskets until St. Joe's John Paul Frazier nailed a three to tie the game at 12 midways through the first half. The Pilgrims held onto a lead that got as large as seven points, which was shortened to two by the end of the opening half.
  • Both teams battled as neither team had a lead larger than four through the first ten minutes of the second half. Senior guard Alex Williams (Miramar, Fla.) tried to swing the momentum back in favor of the Pilgrims with a highlight-worthy dunk, but a quick layup put SJC back in front. With nine minutes left to go in the game, Wani Donato made a layup to put the Monks up by six. Freshman guard Josh Robie (Bethlehem, N.H.) made a three to cut the lead to five.  The Pilgrims kept the energy as they made their shots. The Monks did too as any basket that NEC made was answered by SJC. The Monks then stepped up on defense to outscore the Pilgrims 26-19 to close out the conference win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Five Pilgrims crossed the ten-point mark on the night, including sophomore guard Mike Strazzeri (Chichester, N.H.) (15), senior guard Theisen Lee (Cincinnati, Ohio) (14), Gomeau (13), Williams (12) and MacLeod (10). Silvano Ismail was the only player in the game to surpass 20 points, while Remijo Wani and Donato both hit 10+ points.
  • Ismail led the Monks with five assists, while Gomeau tied him to lead the Pilgrims in that category.
  • Williams led the Pilgrims with eight rebounds, while Donato and Frazier were tied at six to lead the Monks.

UP NEXT

  • Up next for NEC, the team travels down to Chicopee, Mass. To take on the hosting Elms College Blazers with a 3:00 PM tipoff.
  • The Monks host the Anna Maria AMCATS up in Standish, Maine on Saturday.
