PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The New England College men's wrestling team go 1-3 on the day obtaining a win over Plymouth State University at the NEWA Conference Duals on Sunday from the Wildcat Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
TOP 'GRIMS
- NEC had a tall task in front of them early on as they had to face conference juggernauts in Coast Guard Academy which is currently ranked 14th within the NWCA D3 Tournament Top 25 Coaches Poll. When it was all said and done NEC would drop their dual against the Bears 38-10. The victors for NEC were junior Caden Frost (Steep Falls, Maine), senior Boburjon Berdiyorov (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), and junior Zach Soda (Burlington, Mass.).
- Things were still tough on NEC in their following match as things were unable to simmer down facing yet another tough opponent in the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine. The huskies amongst the NWCA D3 Tournament Top 25 Coaches Poll sit in 8th unfortunately handing NEC back-to-back losses thus far, 37-15. Freshman Dominic Gangi (Methuen, Mass.), Berdiyorov, and sophomore Michael Follo (Derry, N.H.) manage to gather themselves a win.
- The 'Grims would bounce back in their next match, claiming victory over the Panthers of Plymouth State University, 37-18. The match between the two teams commenced in tremendous fashion for the 'Grims recording a dominant 26-point advantage over the Panthers early on. With there being such a gap, the Panthers were no match for the 'Grims to be able to impose a comeback making NEC to be the victors on the day. Seven 'Grims in Dominic Gangi, junior Patrick Hughes (Chelmsford, Mass.), Frost, sophomore Michael Follo (Derry, N.H.), Berdiyorov, Soda, and junior Josh Bean (Londonderry, N.H.) came out victorious.
- NEC's fourth and final match on the day at the conference duals ended in defeat over the Bears of Bridgewater State University, 36-15. The only 'Grims that could hold their own during this outing proved to be Frost, Berdiyorov, and Soda.
- Berdiyorov was on fire from start to finish over the course of the conference duals as the senior won all four of his matches for the 'Grims improving his overall record on the season to 19 wins with only three losses.
