Women’s Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Gordon

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's volleyball team suffered a three-sets-to-one loss against visiting Gordon College on Wednesday evening at Bridges Gymnasium in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: Gordon College 3, New England College 1 (22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 16-25)
Records: Fighting Scots 2-2, 0-0 CNE | Pilgrims 0-4, 0-0 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • NEC jumped out to a quick lead in set number one, leading by as many as six points in the early goings, before Gordon responded with a 9-2 run to knot it up at 14-14. The two teams would go back-and-forth before the Fighting Scots eventually ended on a 7-3 run to take the first set, 25-22.
  • The second set played out similarly to the first as NEC held onto a slight lead early before Gordon tied it up at 12-12. The visitors would close out the set on a 13-8 run, led by senior Joey Keltner (Anacortes, Wash.) whose three kills down the stretch would be critical in taking the 2-0 advantage.
  • Down two sets to none, the 'Grims once again separated from Gordon early in the third set, yet this time NEC would not let it go. NEC won the first four points of the set and quickly expanded their four-point lead to an 11-point lead. Led by graduate middle-blocker Tatiana Sampson (Kailua, Hawaii) and her five kills in the set, the Pilgrims would claim the third set, 25-18.
  • Following a fairly lopsided third set, the Fighting Scots responded by taking control in the fourth. Gordon jumped out to a 12-5 lead and kept the 'Grims at arm's length for the remainder of the match. With a 25-16 fourth set win, the visitors would take the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sampson led all players with 14 kills while Gordon's Keltner and senior Annie Murphy (Wenham, Mass.) both had 12 kills. Murphy was a terror at the net for the Scots with six blocks
  • Gordon sophomore Annika Schmitt (Quincy, Mass.) had a game-high 24 assists. Junior setter Aurora Gutierrez-Macias (El Paso, Tex.) had 19 assists for the 'Grims and sophomore setter Alexandra Seijas (Fort Myers, Fla.) collected 18.
  • Both sides had nine service aces on the day with Schmitt and Gutierrez-Macias each pacing their squads with four a-piece.
