Women’s Basketball's Second Half Surge Not Enough to Overcome Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. – The New England College women's basketball team faced defeat on the road on Saturday at Brissette Court in Worcester, Massachusetts in non-conference action.
 
THE BASICS

TURNING POINTS
  • The Lancers wasted no time getting situated in the first quarter of play going on a 10-point scoring run. NEC sophomore guard Bailey Burke (New Bedford, Mass.) scored the first points of the game for the team getting to the lane for a layup that was followed up by senior guard Amya Moss (Norfolk, Va.) converting on a jump shot, 14-4 still in favor of the Lancers. WSU offense continued to execute efficiently scoring nine straight, NEC senior forward Gabriella Matlock (Tulare, Calif.) would score the last bucket of the quarter as the defense of the Lancers kept the 'Grims under 10 points, 23-6.
  • The second quarter was closely contested, NEC locked in on the defensive side of the ball allowing seven points but still struggled to come up with an answer offensively only scoring nine. The 'Grims would outscore the Lancers by two, 9-7 thanks to the scoring from Burke, Moss, Matlock, and junior guard Ajayah Lively (Victorville, Calif.) who continued to contribute to the team's efforts. Lively would score the last four points of the quarter, 30-15 with the lead still in favor of the Lancers going into the half.
  • Things for NEC would pick back up in a big way on the scoring end as they recorded 18 points. The Lancers jumped out to an early 6-0 run, but Matlock responded with a made layup that would lead to another run of seven points accumulated for the Lancers, 43-17. At 5:37 junior forward Abigail Lacy (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) got involved in the offense scoring her first points of the game from behind the arc. Leading to another three-pointer made by junior guard Macy Gordon (Boscawen, N.H.) at 3:24, 47-24. From there on the defense stood stout for the remainder of the quarter allowing only a point to be scored as NEC recorded nine points to close things out, 48-33.
  • During the fourth quarter, NEC would make a push going on a 7-0 run that brought the team to within eight points, 54-46 with 2:40 remaining. The Lancers took control of the time remaining to obtain the win over NEC, 60-48.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC Moss led the 'Grims with an outing of 12 points, three rebounds, and an assist. Matlock would follow up with 10 points and four rebounds.
  • WSU senior guard Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was the game leader in points concluding with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals. Next was sophomore guard Mia Haynes (Worcester, Mass.) who had 13 points, four rebounds, and an assist.
  • Lancers capitalized on points off turnovers having 19 compared to the 'Grims who had three.
  • It was a close battle for points off the bench that ended an advantage for the 'Grims, 15-13.
  • NEC could not make the most of their free throw opportunities finishing 7-for-13 while the Lancers were 12-for-19.
