Men’s Basketball Falters at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The New England College men's basketball team loss on the road to at Plymouth State University 90-67 on Tuesday at Foley Gymnasium in Plymouth, New Hampshire in non-conference action.

TURNING POINTS
  • The early stages of the game were in favor of NEC as they fired on all cylinders jumping out to a 10-0 that was capped off by a jump shot made by graduate guard Nick Gomeau (Enfield, Conn.). PSU did not waver in the face of adversity after a quick start by the pilgrims as they managed to even the score by 11:03 as senior forward Elijah Swanson (Meredith, N.H.). The scoring at that point diminished a touch for the 'Grims but got things rolling tying things up once again with the Panthers with 3:46 remaining, 27-27. Gomeau sinks a three-point shot to put the 'Grims back out in front, 30-27. From there on NEC would only score one more point than the Panthers would come back with an answer of their own by scoring 10 points earning a six-point lead going into halftime, 37-31.
  • PSU picked up back where they left off continuing to expand their lead going on a 6-0 run out of the gate in the second half, 43-31. Senior guard Alex Williams (Miramar, Fla.) would score the first points of the half for NEC from behind the arc to shorten the deficit by 10, 43-34. By 14:28 in the second half PSU scored the next 10 points continuing to pile on the lead they have produced for themselves, 53-33.
  • NEC would score the next eight trying to crave their way back into the game back the Panthers would continue to find ways to score in bunches as they tacked on another eight points as well to their total, 62-42 at 10:47. The two teams would trade buckets but nothing the 'Grims would do made an impact in the score differential. With a timeout called at 3:22 Panthers scored 19 points while NEC had 13, 81-55. The defense of NEC began to pick up the for the remainder of the half allowing nine as the offense would answer back as well outscoring the panthers during this stretch having 12. By the conclusion of this game, it was no match after the damage that the Panthers inflicted on the 'Grims that bestowed PSU with the win on the evening, 90-67.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC sophomore guard Jasen Stovall (Tampa, Fla.) finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and two assists while Gomeau had 11 points, a rebound and an assist.
  • PSU senior guard Kevin Henry (Stratham, N.H.) was the player of the game scoring 20 points, grabbing six rebounds, and compiling one block. Four other Panthers would finish behind him in double digits scoring numbers in junior guard Torran Bosworth (Springfield, Mass.), sophomore guard Jaden Montgomery (Nashua, N.H.), Swanson, and sophomore guard Eli Pockette (Rutland, Vt.)
  • Points off turnovers were heavily in favor of the Panthers, 27-8.
  • PSU took advantage of points in the paint obtaining 38 as NEC had 20.
  • Shooting from the field for the Panthers was 50.8% and the 'Grims recorded 36.7%. PSU went 16-for-19 from the charity strip and NEC was 13-for-22.
