Men’s Wrestling Comes Up Short at Ursinus, 21-20

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.– The New England College men's wrestling team suffered a 21–20 loss at Ursinus College on Saturday at Helfferich Hall in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

TOP 'GRIMS

NEC freshman Dominic Gangi (Methuen, Mass.) got things rolling in favor of the 'Grims early on getting his hand raised in a win over senior Franco Mazza (Succasunna, N.J.) by decision, 5-2 at 125 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 3-0.
NEC sophomore Michael Follo (Derry, N.H.) managed to emulate the same result earning another win by decision (10-6) for the 'Grims beating freshman Aiden Leypoldt (Ocean City, N.J.) at 133 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 6-0.
The bears would begin to shift the momentum into their favor as sophomore Andrew Schaen (Harbeson, Del.) would claim the first win for UC over junior Caden Frost (Steep Falls, Maine) by major decision, 13-4 at 141 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 6-4.
NEC senior Boburjon Berdiyorov (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) would respond to help stretch the 'Grims lead back out to a more comfortable margin earning a win over sophomore Max Parnis (West Chester, Pa.) by major decision, 13-5 at 149 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC (10-4).
NEC freshman Rocco Hayden (Oxford, Maine) continued to build on the success of his other teammates winning his match over junior Gabriel Heaney (Jim Thrope, Pa.) by major decision, 15-3 at 157 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 14-4. Making four straight wins for the 'Grims in this matchup along with three by major decisions.
UC would bounce back thanks to the efforts of sophomore Nicolas Rehfuss (Philadelphia, Pa.) over NEC sophomore Andrew Piedrahita (Westford, Mass.) by technical fall, 16-1 at 165 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 14-9.
UC began to pick up the pace catching up to the 'Grims on the score after another win was credited to them as junior Anthony Cerulli (Churchville, Pa.) beat NEC freshman Joseph Bolduc (Methuen, Mass.) by decision, 9-4 at 174 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 14-12.
NEC junior Kyle Gora (Hudson, N.H.) did his part to keep the 'Grims in the during the closely contested matchup between the two teams as he won over senior Jordan Downey (Clark, N.J.) by fall (1:31). Team score in favor of NEC 20-12.
UC still would find a way to creep back into the mix showing no signs of wavering as the Bears took a win by fall (1:20) credited to senior Connor Fritsch (Newton, N.J.) over senior Trevion Atallah (Reading, Mass.) at 197 lbs. Team score in favor of NEC 20-18.
The match would be to decide the victor of the this outing and NEC was unable to respond as UC sophomore Mohamed Abdelatty (Lawerence, N.J.) earned the crucial win for his team over sophomore Brandon Lavasta (Lawrence, Mass.) by major decision 11-1 at 285 lbs. Team score in favor of UC 22-20, a point was deducted during the 285 lbs. bout still concluding in a win for UC 21-20.
After the varsity matches took place then was the exhibitions that started off with NEC senior Wyatt Gentile (Sunset Beach, N.C.) who won his first match by match decision, 9-2 over freshman Gabe Tulone (East Greenville, Pa.) at 133 lbs. Gentile's next match resulted in a loss over freshman Nicolas Brockson (Fallbrook, Calif.) by fall (1:50) at 141 lbs.
Next was junior Cole Patterson (Raleigh, N.C.) was loss by technical fall, 17-0 over sophomore Samuel Teti (Haddon Heights, N.J.) at 141 lbs.
NEC junior Joseph Gangi (Methuen, Mass.) would wrap up the exhibitions that took place with a win by a technical fall, 18-3 over freshman CJ Ambrose (Glenside, Pa.) at 149 lbs.
