Records: Blazers 1-6-1, 1-4-1 GNAC | Pilgrims 3-0-4, 2-0-3 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams battled hard in the first half as both squads were able to create some good scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to capitalize, sending the game into halftime as a scoreless tie.
- Coming out of the break, the visitors wasted no time getting on the board as junior Brandyn Costa (Palmer, Mass.) lifted a shot over the rushing goalie of New England College to score the game's first goal at the 45:25 mark. He was assisted by sophomore Jacobo Molina Ferrer (Valencia, Spain).
- In the 73rd minute, the Pilgrims threatened in front of the opposing net, with a pair of shots culminating in a hand ball by the Blazers and an NEC penalty kick. Junior midfielder William Scala (Manchester, N.H.) lined up for the PK, looking for the equalizer. Scala powered the ball into the left side of the net, ricocheting off the goalie's outstretched hands, and into the back of the net.
- Now tied 1-1, the Pilgrims were in search of another goal. Just minutes after Scala's PK, with 14:19 remaining, a beautiful cross by sophomore midfielder Wyatt Flibbert (Windham, Maine) found a streaking Anthony Aguiar (Guilford, N.H.) for a highlight-worthy goal, putting the 'Grims up 2-1.
- At around the 80th minute, Elms' team captain, junior defender Jimmy Maznicki (Ellington, Conn.), sent a free kick from around midfield into the box in front of NEC's goal. The pass was perfectly placed, as Molina Ferrer received the ball in mid-air and sent it into the right corner of the net, tying the game back up at 2-2.
- As the game approached the final minute of play, and with a tie looming, the Pilgrims looked to make one last run at winning the game. Junior Darren Mota (Inverness, Scotland) raced down the left sideline and crossed a pass to Flibbert on the left side of the box. Flibbert was immediately fouled to the ground, granting NEC a penalty kick. It was once again Scala who lined up for the PK, and the junior immediately took the shot and sent the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, scoring the game-winning goal for the Pilgrims.
