Men’s Lacrosse was Not “Lion Around” against Eastern Nazarene, Clinches Regular Season Title

QUINCY, Mass. – The New England College men's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half to win the New England Collegiate Conference regular season title against Eastern Nazarene College in NECC action on Wednesday evening at Creedon Field in North Quincy, Massachusetts. 

THE BASICS 
Score: Eastern Nazarene College 7, New England College 16 
Records: Pilgrims 4-11, 4-0 NECC | Lions 3-7, 2-2 NECC 

HOW IT HAPPENED & TOP 'GRIMS 

  • On a late evening matchup, both teams started the game showing no wearing out as the 'Grims had a 4-3 competitive edge after the first quarter. Momentum started to swing towards NEC's favor as they scored another four goals in the second quarter putting them up 8-5. From then on, the 'Grims came out of halftime with no mercy, going 8-2 in the final two quarters to end in a 16-7 win and go undefeated in NECC play. 

  • NEC was led by senior midfielder Devon Saeger (Chester Springs, Penn.) with a career high five goals with all of them coming after the first quarter. 

  • 'Grims junior attacker Matt Daley (Plymouth, Mass.) had an all-around performance as he recorded four goals along with three assists. Daley also made the team's first goal of the game. 

  • NEC sophomore attacker Thomas Norton (Mansfield, Mass.) also made a statement in Wednesday's game with also four goals with his first goal coming 1:44 into the game. 

  • While he may not have gotten as many goals, 'Grims junior midfielder Thomas Doe (Windham, N.H.) did make an impact by dishing out a team high four assists along with one goal coming in at 2:12 left in the fourth quarter. 

  • NEC had also got some meaningful help from senior attacker Sam Crary (Newburyport, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Cam Hebert (Plantation, Fla.) as each scored a goal in the game with them coming at 12:59 in the second quarter and 14:51 in the fourth quarter respectively. 

  • The Lions were led by sophomore attacker Jamar Griggs as he gave ENC three goals all coming in the first three quarters. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • NEC goalkeeper, sophomore Connor Almstrom (Cumberland, R.I.) ended the game with eight saves. 

  • ENC goalkeeper, sophomore Walter Stockwell (Hyde Park, Mass.) gave the Lions all he could give as he finished the game with 26 saves. 

  • ENC was no match for NEC as the 'Grims ended up with a 66-18 advantage on total shots in the game. 

  • The 'Grims also won the face-off battle by a 17-8 advantage. 

UP NEXT 

  • NEC and ENC are back on the field on Saturday, April 29, when they face each other again in the NECC Men's Lacrosse Championship, which will be held at Don Melander Field with the game starting at 1:00 PM, with the winner to compete against the winner of the CSAC Championship for a chance to compete in the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament.
