Women’s Ice Hockey Can’t Stop Elmira

BOXSCORE
HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team lost 8-1 to visiting Elmira College on Friday evening at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
THE BASICS
Score:                    Elmira 8, New England College 1
Records:               Pilgrims 4-19-1, 1-15-1 NEHC | Eagles 18-5-0, 16-0-0 NEHC
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pilgrims put up a gritty defensive effort for much of the opening period, but the Eagles finally found the back of the net with 7:45 left in the first as Elmira senior forward Holley Riva (Lakeville, Conn.) scored her ninth goal of the season to put the visitors up 1-0, with assists to graduate forwards Morgan Mordini (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Mary McCafferty (Wall Township, N.J.). The two teams would enter the first intermission with Elmira still leading by one.
  • The Eagles opened the second period on the attack as Elmira freshman forward Emma Bradbury (Hatchet Lake, N.S.) scored her eighth goal of the season to put the visitors up by two, with assists to junior defender Madi Morton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore forward Erika Goleniak (Canton, Mich.).
  • Then with 9:55 to go in the second, the Eagles would capitalize on a power play as Elmira sophomore forward Sophie Compeau (Potsdam, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season, with an assist to senior forward Claire Meeder (Woodbury, Minn.).
  • Then with 7:37 remining in the second, freshman forward Piper Andrews (Fergus Falls, Minn.) found the back of the net with assists to Compeau and graduate defender Jenny Heath (Pinckney, Minn.).
  • Finally, with 3:18 left in the second, Elmira sophomore forward Claire Elfring (Laingsburg, Mich.) scored her fourth goal of the year, assisted by Elmira sophomore forward McKenzie Schmidt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) as the visitors went into the second intermission up 5-0.
  • Down 7-0 with 9:15 to go in the game, the 'Grims finally got on the board thanks to an unlikely source when NEC sophomore forward Becca Pouliot (Milan, N.H.) scored her first goal of the season and only the second of her career, assisted by freshman forward Isabella Marzano (Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore forward Jaelyn Kelleher (Concord, N.H.). It was the first goal NEC has ever scored against Elmira as NEHC opponents.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC senior goalie Sean D'urso (Andover, Mass.), in the final start of her collegiate career, tallied 61 saves on the night for the 'Grims.
  • Elmira sophomore goalie Leonie-Louise Kuehberger (Hingham, Mass.), ranked second in the nation at press time in shutouts, finished with 12 stops in 50 minutes for the Eagles.
  • The Eagles outshot the Pilgrims, 70-19.
UP NEXT
  • NEC will conclude their 2022-2023 season on Saturday when they play host to the Herons of William Smith College with the puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the Pilgrims will be honoring their outgoing senior class as part of Senior Day.
