HOW IT HAPPENED
- NEC senior forward Jhuwon Davis (Detriot, Mich.) got the 'Grims on the board 12:49 into the first period with his fourth goal of the season, that coming off a pass from junior forward Anthony Cinato (Warren, Mich.) to put the hosts in front.
- The 'Grims would make it 2-0 less than a minute later when NEC senior forward and leading scorer Alex LaPlante (Londonderry, N.H.) capitalized on a breakdown of the Eagles' defense to score his team-leading eighth goal of the season, assisted by Cinata and freshman defenseman Graham Padgitt (St. Charles, Ill.).
- Still in the first, Elmira got a goal back with 2:51 remaining when junior forward Chance Gorman (Flemington, N.J.) found the back of the net with assists to fellow junior forwards Jared Smith (Rochester, N.Y.) and Ryan Reifler (Binghamton, N.Y.) as the game headed into the first intermission.
- With the score still at 2-1 in the third period, NEC picked up some much-needed insurance as LaPlante scored his second goal of the game and his ninth of the season on an unassisted strike.
- Facing a two-goal deficit with 6:52 left in regulation, the Soaring Eagles would rally, picking up a goal from junior forward Nicholas Domitrovic (Ottawa, ONT) before watching junior defenseman Amedeo Mastrangeli (Richmond Hill, ONT) tie the game up with exactly five minutes to go. A flurry of action in the closing moments were unable to decide a winner, and the teams headed into overtime.
- In the extra period, NEC senior goalie Spencer Kozlowski (Vancouver, B.C.) was a force of nature, turning away shot after shot as Elmira looked to steal a game that had appeared lost minutes earlier. The senior held tough, however, and the teams settled for the draw.
