Women’s Basketball Struggles at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The New England College women's basketball team saw their losing streak grow to seven with a tough loss at Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon at the Merriman Gym in New London, Connecticut in nonconference action.  

THE BASICS 
Score: New England College 75, Coast Guard 54 
Records: Pilgrims 7-10 | Bears 10-9 

TURNING POINTS 

  • Both offenses came out to slow starts, but Coast Guard would finally get things rolling with a 15-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Bears would expand their lead to 36-16 by halftime.  

  • After scoring just 16 points in the first half, the 'Grims put up 18 in each of the last two quarters. Unfortunately, it was too little too late as the consistent Bears attack proved to be too much, with a final score of 75-54.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • NEC senior forward Ericka Pratt (Miami, Fla.) led the team with 12 points and 16 rebounds on her way to her ninth double-double of the season.  

  • Junior guard Alissia Corona (Wylie, Texas) was the lone other Pilgrim to hit double figures, as she put up 10 points off the bench on 3-6 shooting from beyond-the-arc.  

  • 'Grims guards Macy Gordon (Boscawen, N.H.) and Asia Jones (Boynton Beach, Fla.) each added 8 points. 

  • Coast Guard had four players in double figures, with senior guard Jacqueline Ward (Brant Beach, N.J.) led all scorers with 22 points while shooting 11-13 from the free-throw line.  

  • Bears sophomore Julia Mann (Central Square, N.Y.) added a double-double of her own with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  

  • Both teams struggled shooting the ball as NEC shot 26.9 percent from the field and Coast Guard hitting on 34.8 percent of their attempts. Both teams shot 23 percent from distance on the day. 

  • NEC turned the ball over 17 times compared to Coast Guard's 9.  

  • Both teams have now won three games each in six all-time meetings.  

UP NEXT 

  • Up next for NEC, the team returns to New England Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Lesley University at 7:00 PM. The game was originally set to play on Wednesday, January 25th, but was rescheduled due to poor weather conditions.  

  • Coast Guard looks ahead to a Wednesday matchup with conference foe Mount Holyoke, set to tip-off at 5:30 PM.
