Men’s Basketball Stumbles Late Against Norwich

NORWICH, Vt. – The New England College men's basketball team fell at Norwich on Saturday at Andrews Hall on the campus of Norwich University in the opening round of the Ed Hockenbury Classic.  

THE BASICS 
Score: New England College 56, Norwich 66
Records: Pilgrims 1-7, 0-0 NECC | Cadets 6-1, 0-0 GNAC 

 
TURNING POINTS 

  • The 'Grims struggled shooting the ball in the first half, hitting just 27.3 percent of their attempts while failing to connect on a single long ball. The Cadets took a six-point lead into the break. 

  • A 13-4 NEC run early in the second half quickly narrowed Norwich's lead down to one point, and with 5:56 left in the game, the Pilgrims finally retook the lead following back-to-back layups by freshman guard Khalon Taylor (Tuscon, Ariz.). 

  • Following some back-and-forth between the two teams, the 'Grims secured a one-point lead with 3:41 left in the game but failed to score another point as Norwich scored eleven unanswered points to end the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Junior guard Kyle Inglis (Burlington, Mass.) led NEC with 19 points to go along with 7 rebounds. 

  • NEC sophomore guard Alex Williams (Miramar, Fla.) recorded his first double-double of the season adding 13 points and 10 boards. 

  • Taylor contributed 11 points and 9 rebounds in just 16 minutes for the 'Grims.  

  • Norwich was led by junior guard Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.) who put up 19 points including 9 of 10 from the free-throw line.  

  • The 'Grims shot better in the second half, but still shot just 33.8 percent from the field in the game. 

  • Norwich shot 21-25 (84%) from the FT line while New England College went just 6-14 (42.9%) 

UP NEXT 

  • Up next for NEC, the team returns to action tomorrow at 1 PM to take on the loser of UMaine-Fort Kent and Bridgewater State. 

  • Norwich advances to the Championship Game tomorrow at 3 PM and awaits either UMaine-Fort Kent or Bridgewater State to wrap up the 2022 Ed Hockenbury Classic.
