Rally Falls Just Short as Men’s Hoops Ends Cruzin’ Classic Against Messiah

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The New England College men's basketball team concluded their trip to the Cruzin' Classic hosted by St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida with an 82-77 loss against Messiah University.

TURNING POINTS
  • Down by five at halftime, the 'Grims held tough for much of the second half, pulling to within one on a pair of free throws freshman guard Jasen Stovall (Tampa, Fla.) with 6:09 to go, and were within one once again with 2:38 remaining off a free throw from freshman shooting guard Stravis Lutchman (Bradenton, Fla.), 74-73. But NEC struggled down the stretch, going scoreless in the next five possessions as the Falcons pulled away.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC freshman guard Khalon Taylor (Tuscon, Ariz.), already a two-time New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Rookie of the Week, led all scorers with a career-high 24 points in just 19 minutes, shooting 9-of-12 from the floor and dishing out three assists.
  • Messiah graduate forward Tyler Penley (Drexel Hill, Pa.) led the Falcons with 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
  • Stovall scored 18 points off the bench, going a perfect three-of-three from downtown.
  • Messiah junior guard Bryce Coletti (Myerstown, Pa.) filled the stat-line with 11 points, nine boards, seven assists and two steals.
  • NEC sophomore forward Alex Williams (Miramar, Fla.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds with two steals.
  • Luchtman finished with 13 points and three boards.
  • The 'Grims made a season-high ten three-pointers collectively, shooting 43.5 percent from behind the arc.
  • The Falcons took advantage of miscues by the Pilgrims, holding a 30-7 edge in points off turnovers.
