McGovern lifts Men’s Ice Hockey with Heroics in first game back

GORHAM, Maine – The New England College men's ice hockey team won 4-3 at the University of Southern Maine on Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham, Maine in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

THE BASICS
Score:                    New England College 4, Southern Maine 3
Records:               Pilgrims 5-5, 3-3 NEHC | Huskies 1-8, 1-6 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The 'Grims exploded out of the gate in the first period, scoring three goals in the opening stanza. NEC senior forward Hunter Hall (Boise, Idaho) scored his first goal of the season just 2:34 into game to get the Pilgrims on the board. Junior defenseman Zach Nelson (Hudson, Mass.) followed that up with his first career goal at 6:58 in while junior forward Linus Udd Hellgren (Gavle, Sweden) found the back of the net for his first goal of the season with 7:01 left in the period.
  • After the Huskies rallied to tie it up at 3-3 at 11:24 into the third period, the game appeared headed into overtime. But that was when NEC graduate forward Bernie McGovern (Medford, Mass.) returning to the NEC lineup for the first time this season, took a pass from senior forward Chris Lee (Rapid City, S.D.) and blasted his first goal of the year past the keeper as the 'Grims held on for the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC senior goalie Spencer Kozlowski (Vancouver, B.C.) picked up the win after tallying 38 saves.
  • Shots on goal were 41-34 in favor of the host Huskies.
  • NEC has now won seven straight games over Southern Maine.

UP NEXT

  • Up next for NEC, the 'Grims face another NEHC foe when they travel to Babson College to face the Beavers in a 4:00 p.m. game.
