THE BASICS
Score: New England College 1, Eastern Nazarene 0
Records: Pilgrims 9-7-3 | Lions 7-7-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions had the edge for most of the game, outshooting the 'Grims and often controlling possession. Nevertheless, a gritty defense performance by NEC and a stellar display by sophomore goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.) kept the game scoreless for nearly all of regulation.
- With 7:27 remaining in the game, the 'Grims were awarded a corner kick. NEC senior defender Robenson Saintil (West Palm Beach, Fla.) lined one up and put a perfect shot into the box, finding freshman forward Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld (Santiago, Chile) for a header into the net.
- Less than eight minutes later, after the 'Grims turned away a ferocious final effort by the Lions, the NEC players and fans exploded onto the field in celebration, having cemented their place in history as the final champions of the NECC.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Walker, a 2022 NECC all-conference selection, tallied six saves for his seventh shutout of the season.
- ENC junior goalkeeper Antonio Soto Valente (Maracaibo, Venezuela) posted two saves for the Lions. Freshman forward Mattia Zuin (Mexico City, Mexico) finished with three shots including two on-goal.
- For Sanchez-Korenfeld, it was his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
- NEC sophomore midfielder William Scala (Manchester, N.H.) was named the NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player for his performance at both ends of the field.
- Scala, Walker, freshman midfielder Anthony Aguiar (Guilford, N.H.), and senior midfielder Alex Rust (Hooksett, N.H.) were all named to the NECC All-Tournament team.
UP NEXT
- NEC is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight. They await word on their fate from the selection show on Monday.
