MANCHESTER, N.H. – The New England College men's ice hockey team won 4-2 at Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday evening in the finals of the Stovepipe Tournament at the Ice Den Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, claiming their first Stovepipe Championship since 2002.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Down 1-0 at the end of the first period, the 'Grims needed almost no time whatsoever to get on the board in the second as NEC senior forward Alex LaPlante (Londonderry, N.H.) took a long pass from senior forward Chris Lee (Rapid City, S.D.) on a breakaway and finished for his team-leading fourth goal of the season just 32 seconds in to tie it up at 1-1.
- Then 8:08 into the second, NEC was on a five-on-three power play when junior forward Anthony Cinato(Warren, Mich.) went low-left on a pass to junior forward Linus Udd Hellgren (Gavle, Sweden) who found sophomore forward David Novotny (Delray Beach, Fla.) for the finish as the Pilgrims went up 2-1. Novotny tied LaPlante for the team's scoring lead on the play.
- The 'Grims went up 3-1 with 7:08 left in the second again on a power play as NEC freshman forward Manny Cabral (Providence, R.I.) scored his third career goal, assisted by Cinato and freshman defenseman Graham Padgitt (St. Charles, Ill.).
- Up 3-2 in the third, NEC picked up an insurance goal from Cinato with 11:31 to go in the game, assisted by Cabral and Padgitt.
- Cinato was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, starring in both NEC wins.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- NEC senior goalie Andrew Kormos (Milford, Mich.) stopped 33 of 35 shots on the night for his third win of the season.
- The Penmen outshot the Pilgrims, 35-27.
