Men’s Ice Hockey Falls Short to AMCATS

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's ice hockey team lost 4-2 against visiting Anna Maria College on Tuesday evening at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The AMCATS would strike first just 6:04 into the game when sophomore right defenseman Derek Raposo(Hannon, Ont.) capitalized on a power play to score his third goal of the season, assisted by senior defenseman Cam Tobey (Falmouth, Mass.) and sophomore right-winger Matthew Byrne (Penticton, B.C.) as the visitors went up 1-0 going into the first intermission.
  • The second period saw an explosion of scoring from both teams. Just 2:46 in, Anna Maria would go up by two as junior center Matthew Gilbert (Wyandotte, Mich.) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from freshman defenseman Bryden Sinclair (Peguis, Manit.).
  • The 'Grims finally answered two minutes later as NEC senior forward Alex LaPlante (Londonderry, N.H.) continued his hot streak of later, scoring his team-leading third goal of the season with an assist to senior forward Chris Lee (Rapid City, S.D.), making the score 2-1.
  • Then 5:24 into the second, it was Byrne scoring himself to put Anna Maria back up by two, assisted by Raposo. It was Byrne's second goal of the year.
  • Finally, 7:12 into the second, NEC freshman forward Manny Cabral (Providence, R.I.) scored his second career goal, once again pulling the game to within one. It capped off a scoring frenzy of four goals in about four and a half minutes with the score 3-2.
  • Later in the second with 6:38 left, Byrne would take advantage of a breakdown on defense for his second goal of the game, assisted by sophomore left-winger Ishmael Carrington         (Montreal, Que.). The AMCATS would take their 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
  • Despite a flurry of shots, the third period went scoreless.                             

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC senior goalie Spencer Kozlowski (Vancouver, B.C.) tallied 32 saves in net for the 'Grims.
  • Anna Maria junior goalie Aidan Richardson (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded 23 stops for the AMCATS.
  • Shots were 36-25 in favor of the visitors.

UP NEXT

  • Up next for NEC, the 'Grims travel to Norwich University on Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. game against the host Cadets in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.           
  • Anna Maria hosts cross-county rival Fitchburg State in their next contest, that coming on Saturday with a a 5:40 p.m. puck-drop time.
