HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team opened their 2022-2023 season against visiting Neumann University on Friday evening at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in non-conference action, coming away with a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 overtime victory. It was the first season-opening win for the Pilgrims since October 26, 2012, a 6-1 home win over Cortland State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Down 2-0 late in the second period, NEC senior forward Tatiana Fedeneva (Pervouralsk, Russia) got the 'Grims on the board with 2:29 to go in the stanza, assisted by freshman forwards Olivia Lindberg(Enkoping, Sweden) and Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.).
- 10:32 into the third period and still trailing by one, the Pilgrims would again turn to Fedeneva, as the senior found the equalizer on a power-play with assists to sophomore forward Kaiya Rodriguez (Winthrop, Mass.) and senior defender Kaylee Cross (Arvada, Colo.). The 2-2 score would hold up through a flurry of shots in the final minutes of the period, as the game went into overtime.
- In overtime, the Pilgrims came out firing, with four shots in rapid succession. Just 41 seconds in, NEC senior forward Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, MN) recovered her own putback off a save and slapped it home as Clement Arena exploded in celebration, with assists credited to sophomore forward Meaghan McCamish(Warwick, R.I.) and freshman defender Gabrielle Iwinski (Batavia, Ill.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- NEC senior goalie Hannah Podvey (West Caldwell, N.J.) had a strong night in net, stopping 26 of 28 shots on the night for her second career win.
- Neumann senior goalie Michelle Winand-Bacon (Emeryville, Ontario) finished with 40 saves for the Knights.
- Neumann had goals from senior forward Rachel Frederick (Doylestown, Pa.) and junior forward Cecelia Mick (Klamath Falls, Ore.).
- NEC junior forward Emily Lenzen (Littleton, Colo.), last season's leading scorer for the 'Grims, was dominant on faceoffs, winning 24 of 27 contests and tallying six shots on the night.
- Total shots were 43-28 in favor of the 'Grims.
- It was NEC's first-ever win against Neumann, as they had been 0-3 against the Knights going into the game.
