Men’s Soccer Declaws Lynx on Senior Day

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's soccer team won 5-0 over visiting Lesley University in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score:                    Lesley 5, New England College 0
Records:               Pilgrims 7-7-1, 3-1 NECC | Lynx 0-11, 0-4 NECC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half saw the Pilgrims as the aggressors, with shot after shot coming just short of finding the back of the net. NEC finally broke through in the 39th minute when senior Robenson Saintil (West Palm Beach, Fla.) took a corner kick and perfectly placed the ball for freshman striker Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld (Santiago, Chile) to score on a clean header, his sixth goal of the season as the hosts went up 1-0 going into halftime.
  • Still leading by one with 32:18 to go in the game, the 'Grims picked up some insurance when they caught the Lynx defense on a two-on-one. Sophomore midfielder William Scala (Manchester, N.H.) found a freed up senior Connor Manteau (Pembroke, N.H.) who shot it into the far corner for his second goal of the season to put NEC up 2-0.
  • Just two minutes later, NEC junior forward Logan Cassin (Penacook, N.H.) finished a header for his team-leading seventh goal of the season to give the Pilgrims a three-goal advantage, that assisted by freshman defender Patrick Tewksbury (Londonderry, N.H.).
  • Then with 18:22 remaining, the floodgates opened up as Sanchez-Korenfeld found freshman midfielder Anthony Aguiar (Guilford, N.H.) and the rookie finished for his first career goal as the Pilgrims took a commanding 4-0 lead.
  • Finally, with 5:28 to go, senior forward Tucker Stenger (Enfield, N.H.) found senior midfielders Alex Rust (Hooksett, N.H.) for another goal, the first of Rust's season for the final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC sophomore goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.) picked up the win for the 'Grims, allowing no goals in just under 70 minutes.
  • Lesley sophomore goalkeeper Josiah Williams (Salem, N.C.) finished with ten stops for the Lynx in a heroic performance.
  • Team shots were 33-6 in favor of the Pilgrims.
  • NEC is now 5-1 all-time against Lesley.

SENIOR DAY

  • Prior to the game, the New England College men's soccer program and athletics department recognized this year's senior class as part of senior day. Stenger, Manteau, Eli Leonard (Hamilton, Mass.), Wiskens Flavil (Boston, Mass.), Rust, Jake Natola (Hudson, N.H.), Brendan Hickey (Portland, Conn.) and defenders Connor Fallon (Strafford, N.H.), Alec Irving (Putnum Valley, N.Y.) and Saintil were honored by coaches, teammates, family members and fans for all of their accomplishments at NEC both on and off the field, culminating in last season's NECC Championship. Although their time with the program may be coming to an end, they will forever be a part of the 'Grims family.

UP NEXT

  • Up next for NEC, the team travels to Mitchell College on Wednesday for a crucial conference match, that beginning at 3:00 p.m.
  • Lesley heads to Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. game.
