HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's soccer team won 1-0 over visiting Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Wednesday Evening at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: Mitchell 0, New England College 1
Records: Pilgrims 6-7-1, 2-1 NECC | Mariners 5-8, 1-2 NECC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half was extremely physical as the conference rivals parried for position. With 10:22 to go in the period, NEC freshman forward Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld (Santiago, Chile) put on the most dynamic display of the game thus far when he broke through the defense towards the Mitchell goal. But senior goalkeeper Joey Rosa(Mystic, Conn.) made the save for the Mariners, keeping the game scoreless. Then with 2:34 to go, it was again Sanchez-Korenfeld with a header off a throw in. Rosa again made the stop, and the teams went into the half still tied at 0-0.
- The chippy play continued to define the second half, as the 'Grims continued to hold the advantage in ball possession only to be stymied time and again as the Mariners' defense converged, often drawing fouls but ultimately leaving NEC empty-handed.
- With 7:04 remaining, NEC drew a corner kick taken by senior defender Robenson Saintil (West Palm Beach, Fla.) on the left side. The kick bent perfectly, finding sophomore midfielder William Scala (Manchester, N.H.) on the undefended far side for the header as the Pilgrims bench exploded in triumph with the 1-0 lead and ultimately the game-winner.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
