HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's soccer team lost 2-1 to the visiting Husson University, the top-seeded team in the Northeast Athletic Conference (NAC), in a non-conference match on Sunday at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: Husson 2, New England College 2
Records: Pilgrims 5-7-1 | Eagles 11-3-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pilgrims wasted no time getting on the board as NEC senior forward Connor Manteau (Pembroke, N.H.) stole the ball in the backfield and broke through, blasting it off the left post and bouncing it into the right side of the net just 44 seconds into the game for his first goal of the season as the hosts went ahead 1-0.
- That remained the score up until the 35th minute when Husson freshman striker Patricio Reygadas (Mexico City, Mexico) took a pass from sophomore midfielder Mario Alvarez (Madrid, Spain) and finished for his third goal of the season to tie it up at 1-1 going into halftime.
- With 12 minutes left in the game, the Eagles had a golden opportunity to take the lead for the first time on the day as sophomore striker Arni Hreidarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland) broker free for a clean shot on the NEC goal. His blast glanced off the crossbar, however, and a follow-up putback attempt by freshman midfielder Carlos Etchevers(Caracas, Venezuela) was stopped by the keeper to turn away the threat.
- With seven minutes left in the game, Hreidarsson had two more chances in rapid succession, only to see the first shot blocked and the second one saved, stymying his efforts to find the game-winner.
- Finally, with 2:41 remaining, Husson was awarded a free kick from dead-center at just beyond the circle. Reygadas' shot was turned away, but the ensuing corner kick saw senior midfielder Jarod Bolton (Belchertown, Mass.) drop a ball for sophomore midfielder Domingo Infante's (Huelva, Spain) who finished to finally give the Eagles the lead, and ultimately the win.
