Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Fitchburg State in Season Opener

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The New England College men's ice hockey team fell to Fitchburg State University, 3-1 in non-conference action Friday evening at the Wallace Civic Center

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fitchburg State was able to open up the scoring at 8:51 into the first period, as Joseph Miller was able to collect the loose puck in the crease and flip it over the NEC netminder. The Falcons were able to strike right before the end of the second period. After killing a 5-3, Dean Zerby was able to bank a pass off the board and find Rece Bergeman on the other side of the Pilgrims defense, and he was able to walk in and beat Anthony Pupplo with a backhand shot.

Fitchburg pushed their lead to 3-0 in the opening minute of the third period, as Christopher Vicario score 48 seconds into the frame. New England College finally got on the board at the 3:37 marker of the third period. A shot from the point by Nicholas Rein was tipped in by Trevor Momot. Despite multiple power-play opportunities, the Pilgrims could not cut into the deficit.

GOALTENDERS
Anthony Pupplo turned aside 19 shots despite the loss. Brian McGrath picked up the win for the Falcons, collecting 29 saves for the hosts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-This was the 16th all-time meeting between the two schools. New England College now leads the all-time series 11-4-1.
- Both teams capitalized one on the man-advantage, NEC had 12 power-play chances, while the Falcons had four.
-The Pilgrims dominated the faceoff dot, as they won 77.4% (41-53) of all of the faceoffs.

New England College returns home on Saturday, November 2nd as they play their home opener against Lebanon Valley College at 4:00 pm.
