HOW IT HAPPENED
After 28 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Beavers put a point on the scoreboard 8:04 into the second period. Matt Holtshouer (Manchester, N.H.) took a shot from the right side that rebounded off
Kyle Shapiro's (Ocean Township, N.J.)pads to the left of the net, allowing Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) to tip a shot off of Christian Faggas (Norwood, Mass.) for the score.
Just under five minutes into the third period NEC tied the score at 1-1 on a power play goal by
Joe Osaka (Tokyo, Japan), who redirected
Bryce Nielsen's (Laguna Hills, Calif.) shot from the point.
With just under three-and-a-half minutes left in the game, Ryan Gouveia scored as Shapiro struggled to get back to his feet after being taken out on the prior play.
The Pilgrims pulled Shapiro for the extra skater with 1:13 to play put two shots on net before taking a timeout with 55 seconds to go. With Shapiro still out,
Mike Whitehair (Victor, N.Y.) put another shot on net and the Beavers sailed two attempts wide of the net for icing calls before Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) bested
Carlos Fornaris (Miami, Fla.) to the puck and tapped in the empty-netter goal.
