HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilgrims peppered Bryn Athyn's goaltender in the opening period and posted an 11-5 advantage in shots. With 3:34 remaining in the first period,
Bryce Nielsen (Laguna Hills, Calif.) sent the puck to the front of the net, where
Adam Zollner (Varnamo, Sweden) was waiting to poke it in.
Both teams battled through over 40 minutes of scoreless hockey until NEC tallied their second goal, an empty-netter, with 43 seconds left in the game. Bryn Athyn took a penalty with just over a minute-and-half left in the game, forcing them to pull their goaltender for an even number of skaters. With time winding down,
Joe Osaka (Tokyo, Japan) carried the puck into the corner of the offensive zone and passed it back to
Carlos Fornaris (Miami, Fla.), who sent it to
Mike Whitehair (Victor, N.Y.), positioned just outside the crease.
