Castleton, Vt. - Castleton senior Korey Counos (St. Albans, VT) scored
with six seconds remaining in overtime to cap a 5-0 Castleton run over
the final 12 minutes of play to propel the Spartans to a 6-5
non-conference win over New England College Wednesday evening at Spartan
Stadium.
Castleton's Michael Martinez (Barrington, IL) unleashed a shot on
goal that was turned away by Pilgrim goalie Nick Aquaviva (Syracuse, NY)
with 18 seconds remaining in the overtime. After the rebound was batted
around, Samuel Bailey (Hartford, VT) corralled the ground ball and swung
the ball to Counos. Counos dodged one Pilgrim defender and rifled a shot
low, just inside the right post for the game-winner.
Nohea King (St. Albans, VT) continued to be a late-game catalyst for
the Spartans, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another during
the surge. Craig MacDerment (Clifton Park, NY) tallied a goal and an
assist, while Jake Rick (Rochester, NY) and Martinez each tallied single
markers for the 1-1 Spartans.
Matt Carey (Medford, NY) led the Pilgrim attack with two goals and one
assist, while
Matt Vozzolo (Somers, CT) added a pair of goals. John
Gabriel (West Nyack, NY) converted the other NEC tally as the Pilgrims
fall to 0-2 on the season.
New England College used a stingy defensive effort to take a 2-0 lead
into halftime on the strength of two Vozzolo goals. Carey stretch the
Pilgrim lead to 3-0 with 11:44 remaining in the third, converting a
Clint McDonough (Mountain Lakes, NJ) assist into his second goal of the
season.
Martinez put the Spartans on the board four minutes later, but Carey
struck once again, this time on a nifty feed from
Sam Freihofner
(Scarsdale, NY) for the 4-1 edge heading into the forth period. A tally
from Gabriel gave the Pilgrims the four-goal cushion just
one-minute-fifty-five-seconds into the fourth.
Aquaviva kept Castleton at bay over the next five minutes of play,
before Rick was able to shake free for an unassisted tally, setting off
the Spartan rally. King set up MacDerment to cut the lead to two, then
scored two goals of his own 28 seconds apart to send the game to
overtime.
The game featured outstanding goaltending on both sides of the field,
with Aquaviva turning away 19 Spartan shots, while Castleton David
DeGhetto (Clifton, NJ) stopped 21. Aquaviva stopped eight in the first
period and nine in the second half and overtime, including five in the
fourth period alone. DeGhetto was at his best in the second period,
turning away eight Pilgrim shots. He also came up strong in the
overtime, stopping both shots that came his way.
MacDerment was solid on the face-off winning 11-of-13 and grabbing a
game-high six ground balls.
Castleton travels to Vassar College next Wednesday, March 17 for a 3:00
p.m. non-conference match up. New England College returns to action
Saturday, March 13 when the Pilgrims take on McDaniel College (Md.) at
1:00 p.m.
