Men’s Golf Falls to Norwich in Match Play

BARRE, V.T. - Amid a Nor'easter hitting the East Coast, the New England College men's golf team traveled to the Country Club of Barre on Saturday to compete against Norwich University in match play. The Pilgrims fell to the Cadets, 6.0-5.0.

In the first match, senior Cameron Sheedy (Nashua, N.H.) faced Norwich's Cooper Bertrand, who was named the GNAC Player of the Week last week. Sheedy took an early 1-up lead after carding a three on the par-five 10th hole while Bertrand recorded a six. The senior extended his lead after Bertrand bogeyed the following hole. Bertrand responded with back-to-back birdies to bring the match back to even. Bertrand ultimately took the match, 5&4, using a strong stretch of birdies to pull away.

Sophomore Emil Elias (Ekerö, Sweden) faced Harrison Giambattista in the second match. Elias jumped out to a 3-up lead through the first three holes before Giambattista cut the deficit to two with a par on the 14th. Elias responded with an eagle on the 15th to regain a three-hole advantage. Giambattista continued to battle and eventually fought back to tie the match.

Sophomore Aiden Boule (Concord, N.H.) competed against Jake Kavanagh in the third match. The two remained evenly matched throughout the round, with Boule winning two holes on the back nine to enter the turn all square. Boule then won both the first and second holes on the back nine, but Kavanagh battled back as the match ultimately ended tied.

NEC earned its first point of the day from freshman Edouard Belval-Turmel (Quebec, Canada), who defeated Norwich's Jamie Crispi, 5 & 4. Belval-Turmel maintained his advantage throughout the match and secured the victory after parring the final three holes.

Norwich's Braden Camire earned the Cadets' second win of the day, defeating junior Vesse-Wincent Lampen (Espoo, Finland), 1up. Lampen battled back with a birdie on the eighth hole to cut into Camire's lead, but Camire held on for the victory.

In the sixth match, Norwich's JD Mahoney defeated junior Bryce Sturm (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), 2&1. Sturm held a three-hole advantage heading into the 16th hole before Mahoney rallied to take the final three holes and claim the match.

Junior Dalton Gordon (Boscawen, N.H.) evened the team score at two points apiece in the seventh match. Gordon took an early lead over Norwich's Colin Elliot with a birdie on the first hole and continued to apply pressure throughout the match. Gordon secured the victory on the 16th hole with a par, winning 3&2.

With four matches remaining, the Pilgrims and Cadets split the next two matches. Norwich's Sami Molu defeated freshman Gavin Ford (Hillsborough, N.H.), 3&2, while Jackson Jagemann defeated senior Jack Herron (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), 8&7.

In the ninth match, sophomore Shane Helman (Parma, Ohio) defeated Jack Dunn, 7&2. Helman jumped out to a four-hole lead through the first four holes and extended his advantage to five through nine. Both players bogeyed the 10th hole before Helman closed out the match by parring holes 11 through 16.

The final match went to freshman Drew Peretti (Merrimack, N.H.), who defeated Ethan Nawossa, 8&2.

The Pilgrims will compete in their third tournament in five days when they travel to Keene, N.H., on Tuesday, Sept. 29, to compete in the Keene State Tournament at Keene Country Club.
