PENFIELD, N.Y. - The New England College men's golf team finished Day 1 of the NCAA Championships at +26, sitting tied for 33rd place amongst 43 of the top golf teams in the country. The 'Grims competed at Midvale Country Club in Penfield, New York on day one of the tournament, teeing off on Hole 10 at noontime.  

Senior Timothy Carlson (Albany, N.Y.) got his day started with a birdie on 10 and stayed at 1-under until the 17th hole where Carlson eagled the par-5 to go to 3-under-par. Carlson would ultimately finish -1 for the back nine, which, paired with a +6 on the front nine would give the senior a +5 for the day with a 77. 

It was senior Ryan Waring (Gilmanton, N.H.) who brushed off three straight bogeys to start off the day who ended up with the team's lowest score of the day. Waring birdied hole 17 to secure a +3 for the back nine, and birdied both 1 and 7 for an even par showing on the front nine. His 75 was good for 53rd place after day one. 

Freshman Bryce Sturm (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) scored a +6 on the back nine before steadying the ship on the final nine holes with a +2, netting a day one score of 80. Junior Graham Hassan (Pinckney, Mich.) shot a +5 on the front nine and a +5 on the back nine, finishing with an 82 with three birdies on the day. While just the team's four lowest scores count, freshman Vesse-Wincent Lampen (Espoo, Finland) remained close, rounding out the group's day with an 83. 

Illinois Wesleyan led all teams after day one with a +2, while John Carroll and Carleton rounded out the top three. North Central (MN) brought up the rear with a +55. Defending champions and top ranked Methodist put up a +15 for 19th place. 

Action resumes tomorrow at 8:05 AM as the 'Grims head to Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor, New York for day two.
