A Quick Look
The New England College softball team managed a split of a pair of games today versus North Park University and Saint Mary's College (IN). The Pilgrims used its bats to power past North Park in the opening game of the day 9-6 but fell in game two to Saint Mary's 7-4. With the split, the Pilgrims are now 1-5 on the season.
The win against North Park was head coach

The Inside Story
Game 1 – NEC 9, North Park 6
After going quietly in the top of the first inning, the Vikings got to work early posting four runs on five hits in their half of the inning. Junior Kayla Lorenz had an RBI double to drive in the first run for North Park while classmate Sydney Snyder drove in the final run of the inning with two outs. Snyder was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw by junior
Grace Giesler to end the inning with no further damage.
The Vikings' four-run lead was vanquished in the top of the second inning when the 'Grims exploded for eight runs. NEC loaded the bases with no outs where senior
Olivia Olson drove in junior
Julia Maker with a single up the middle. The next batter was sophomore
Arianna Bayze who singled to right-center to bring home junior
Ashleigh Lemay and sophomore
Abigail Grimes.
The Pilgrims loaded the bases again, which caused a pitching change for North Park. The new pitcher was greeted by sophomore
Kate Gagne who walked to force in Olson to knot the game at four apiece. Bayze then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior
Emma Lopez to put the 'Grims ahead.
With bases loaded for a third time after junior
Surena Montero was hit by a pitch, Maker drove in two more runs with a single to right-center. Montero scored the final run of the inning on a Grimes ground out to first base.
The Pilgrims added a single run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Montero that scored Gagne who singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.
After the first inning, Olson settled down and was very strong entering the final inning before surrendering a pair of runs to pick up her initial win of the season. Olson recorded two strikeouts while also walking two batters over seven innings.
Game 2 – Saint Mary's 7, NEC 4
The Belles grabbed a 1-0 lead after one inning of play on an RBI single by senior Alexis Rauch. Saint Mary's added three more in the bottom of the second to extend its advantage to 4-0.
The Pilgrims cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the home half of the third inning. Giesler hit a one-out single to center field which was followed by another single off the bat by Gagne. On the play, the left fielder didn't field the ball cleanly allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Grimes then singled to left field driving in Giesler and Gagne scored as well on the play when the pitcher couldn't handle the throw to the plate causing the ball to get away to the backstop.
With two outs in the sixth, pinch-hitter Lopez drove a ball to left-center to bring in Lemay who reached on a fielder's choice before moving into scoring position on a single by sophomore
Sonia Garcia.
The Belles struck for three runs in the visitor's half of the seventh inning to increase its lead to 7-3.
The Pilgrims started a rally in the bottom of the inning that began with a single by Gagne followed by an error to give the 'Grims two on. After a fielder's choice, NEC had runners at the corners with one out for Maker who drove in Gagne with a single of her own.
Another error loaded the bases for the Pilgrims, unfortunately, the Belles retired the next two batters on a fly out and a pop out to end the game.
Freshman
Mackenzie Yirrell allowed seven runs, four earned, while striking out one over 6-1/3 innings before giving way to classmate
Amanda Magro.
Just the Stats
Maker and Grimes each had a pair of hits in the opening contest today. Maker also drove in a pair and Gagne scored a pair of runs.
In the second game, Maker collected two more hits and Gagne scored two more runs while Garcia collected two hits.
What's Next
The 'Grims will be in action again tomorrow with games against Skidmore College and Fontbonne.
