Day Four Split for Softball

Pilgrims walk off in Game 2 vs. Fontbonne

A Quick Look
A day four split for the New England College softball team in Kissimmee, Fla. was highlighted by a come-from-behind, 4-3 walk off win versus Fontbonne University in the second game after falling to Skidmore College 9-1 in five innings to start the day.  The Pilgrims are now 2-6 on their spring trip.

The Inside Story
Game 1 – Skidmore 9, NEC 1 (5 innings)
After Skidmore posted four runs in the bottom of the second inning, the 'Grims got one back in the top of the third.  Sophomore Kate Gagne got things going with a bunt single before stealing second base.  She came around on an RBI single from classmate Abigail Grimes, who went to second on the throw home.  Another single by junior Emma Lopez and a two-out walk to junior Julia Maker loaded the bases.  Unfortunately, the Pilgrims couldn't capitalize, as junior Ashleigh Lemay hit the ball hard, but right at the third baseman who handled it for the final out.

The Thoroughbreds added a single run in the fourth inning via a solo home run off the bat of senior Jessica Nachamie.  Skidmore would end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a walk off grand slam by junior Madison Bonham.

Sophomore Wren Anhalt (0-2) suffered the loss for the Pilgrims striking out five batters along the way.

Game 2 – NEC 4, Fontbonne 3
In a well-pitched game, it was freshman 'Grims starter Amanda Magro who outdueled Griffens' starter Sam Foppe to pick up her first collegiate win.  Magro struck out four, three of which came in the first inning when she struck out the side.  Magro wasn't charged with any earned runs, as she moves to 1-1 in her rookie season.

NEC loaded the bases in the second inning and posted its first run on a walk to Gagne, which forced in senior Olivia Olson, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.

The Griffens made the Pilgrims pay for a fielding error in the fifth inning that eventually led to three runs in the frame.  A walk, an infield hit, and a wild pitch accounted for the three runs that scored for Fontbonne.

In the sixth inning, Lemay hit a one-out double deep to left center to put herself in scoring position.  After a pop out to second base by sophomore Sonia Garcia, Magro helped herself with a sharp single up the middle to drive in Lemay to make the score 3-2.

The seventh inning rally started with a one out walk to Grimes, which was followed by a double off the bat of junior Emma Lopez to give the 'Grims the winning run in scoring position.  Grimes scored the tying run on an infield single while moving Lopez to third base.  The next batter was Olson who ended the game with a single to left field.

Just the Stats
Lopez was 3-for-3 versus Skidmore while Gagne and Grimes each collected two hits.

Against Fontbonne, eight Pilgrims registered at least one hit with Magro leading the way with a pair of hits.
